Introduction

This month, there’s much to talk about in the world of youth activism, including a monumental student protest in Canada. In addition to other news, NYRA has concluded its partnership with freechild.org. Also, we are pleased to announce the forming of a new NYRA Chapter. NYRA has also gained quite a few new members this month and is still growing. Be sure to spread the word!

Junior State of America Conference

On Febuary 8th, Alex Koroknay-Palicz spoke at the Junior State of America Conference, held in the Hart Senate Office Building in DC. Junior State of America is a student-organized high school organization focusing on politics, government, and law. Conferences are held regularly throughout the year in various regions of the country. For information on joining the Junior State of America, you can visit their website at www.juniorstate.org.

Canadian Students Protest Unfair Budget Cuts

On Febuary 6th, over 15,000 high school and university students across Canada simultaniously walked out of class protesting budget cuts made by the Canadian Parliament. Since 1993, 7 billion dollars have reportedly been cut from the Canadian federal education budget. While NYRA wasn’t involved, this protest is yet another example of youth taking an active role in their government. For more information, visit http://www.cfs-fcee.ca/.

Campaign Finance Reform Needs Reforming

As many of you may know, a campaign finance reform bill is making its way through the United States Congress and is supported by many citizens. What most of you may not know, though, is that this bill takes a direct stab at youth rights. It contains a clause that would (if the bill passes) make it illegal for those under 18 to donate money to political campaigns and parties. It is important that we make others aware of this potential injustice. If you’d like to get involved, write a letter to your local politicians explaining your views on this bill.

Amicus Brief Update

Unfortunately, NYRA was unable to find a lawyer to write the Amicus Brief. While this is a disappointing turn of events, NYRA plans to continue supporting the ICLU’s fight against the Indiana curfew law, and will most definitely be involved if the case reaches the Supreme Court.

New Webmaster at NYRA

New York native Jordan Cooper was hired this month as the new webmaster for the NYRA website. The lead singer in a punk rock band, he has sound experience in the field of web design, and has also been a stand up comedian. Cooper began updates on the site several weeks ago.

Chapter News

A youth rights club at Georgia Middle College has decided to become a chapter in NYRA.They total 18 members, with others interested in joining as well. Paul and Gillian St.Lawrence have resigned from NYRA-DC, therefore leaving the chapter in need of new leadership once more. Those interested should contact NYRA through our website. All members interested in forming a chapter are encouraged to contact NYRA via www.youthrights.org.
