Introduction

“NYRA Freedom” has a new editor this month, Kerri Jones. I am a high school student in Ohio, and very much excited about being the new editor of this newsletter. This issue will catch you up on January’s news. In this issue, we discuss, among other things NYRA presence at recent or upcoming events, and NYRA’s new membership in YouthVote, an organization encouraging voting in young people.

NYRA to Join YouthVote

The National Youth Rights Association is soon to be a member of YouthVote, which is this nation’s largest unbiased coalition working to increase the political awareness and activism in 18-30 years old. NYRA President Alex Koroknay-Palicz attended a YouthVote open house, and is in the process of making NYRA an official member of YouthVote. The coalition met on January 23 in Washington, DC, and Koroknay-Palicz was in attendance. For more information on YouthVote, visit their website at www.youthvote.org.

NYRA President Speaks to Students

On January 10, NYRA President Alex Koroknay-Palicz delivered a speech to 120 Washington, DC high school students attending a conference with the Washington Close-Up Foundation. The purpose of this trip was to educate them about political involvement and activism, as well as the capital’s significance. Koroknay-Palicz talked about his own efforts as a high school student to end age discrimination in Michigan, and discussed NYRA’s beliefs and stances on issues important to us, making quite an impression and garnering much support from members of the audience on issues such as age restrictions.

Committee Restructuring

Christopher Coes has resigned as head chairman of the Chapter Formation and Recruiting Committee, opting instead for a position as co-chairman so as to direct his attention towards his role as Vice President of NYRA. The new CFR chair is Sandy Sathapornwongkul.

Mark Stanford has been appointed chair of the Fundraising Committee and Alex Cotoia has been appointed chair of the Promotional Committee. Soon their committee structure proposals will be submitted and things will start rolling.
