    I Have a Cold

Yup. Happens every once in a while. Bad part only lasts two or three days tops, followed by several days of constant coughing. In fact, if anyone remembers the December 21 YR chat, I was pretty out of it then due to the December cold I had at the time. Anyway, colds follow this interesting pattern. I always get one in September, and the September cold is often a particularly bad one. This one right now is my Spring one, which can be in either March, April, or May. Varies. I was sick like this the day I received my acceptance letter to Salisbury back in May 2000. In nine semesters of college, I had a cold through four final exam weeks!

When people think of a cold, they really tend to act like you're sicker than you really are, which I find kind of annoying, despite the good intentions. That's my case anyway. People think "wrap yourself in a zillion blankets, eat nothing but soup, drink tea, stay in bed, blah blah blah." Screw that. Life doesn't stop just because your throat hurts and your respiratory tract is filled with scratchy phlegm. I think that mindset of mine began when I started at Montgomery College. Before then, in high school and earlier on, I took almost any excuse to not have to go to school. When I got to college, however, I felt that this was really important, so I can't miss a day and must work much harder now. Got that feeling also when I saw the bookstore sold those tiny (and overpriced!) packets of cold medicine. What do you do when you have a cold? You take your medicine and move on.

And that's just what I did. I never missed a day of college due to a cold. Despite my newfound professional approach to the malady, I still had the issue of what medications to take. NyQuil has never worked with me. Triaminic was good stuff (well, the orange kind anyway). But I couldn't take the syrupy medicines anymore. They make me throw up. So I'm stuck on pills. Well, I tried TheraFlu, and it worked for a while, but I eventually got sick of it. So, yeah, stuck on the pills. Even then, can't take the pill versions of NyQuil or DayQuil. They make me throw up too! I took Tylenol Sinus for a little while until I realized it wasn't helping. Then, in 2001, I discovered Tylenol Cold! Gooooood stuff. On top of dulling the inner ear irritation and helping me breathe, it comes with a nice little medicine high. Ever see that Simpsons when Apu had worked 96 hours straight and thought he was a hummingbird of some kind, then they show footage of him flitting across the store like a hummingbird? That's about how I feel when on Tylenol Cold. Not sure what ingredient did it or how it happens. TheraFlu did it, too. It's an awesome reaction. Even as I type this, I'm doing a little dance in my chair, and there isn't even any music playing. I'm sure I look like a retard, but I don't care. I'm happy.

Anyway, the finals. Never did miss any of them. Took my tests with a pack of tissues beside me and possibly a soda. It was funny in my Calculus class when I wanted to ask a question about a homework problem and couldn't talk so I held up my fingers to indicate the problem number and mouthed the word "five".

What's annoying is how the fever fucks with you. Yesterday, I woke up with my mind on this continuous loop I couldn't get out of. It sucked. It was like it robbed any ability of conscious thought I had. Got out of it finally, but it was scary.

I tried out the salt water trick. Put a little salt water up your nose if the phlegm blocks your breathing. Gargle salt water to soothe sore throat. My grandmother recommended it. Works great! Makes you feel like you've been swimming in the ocean, but otherwise it works very well.

Uh, that's enough mindless rambling for now.

"I've never understood what it is about having sex that makes women dirty. I can recall countless conversations I've had or overheard over the years about women's supposed sexual dirtiness. Struggling with the irrationality of it all, I've often wondered how it's possible that a penis could have such power, that by merely being in the vicinity of a woman's genitals, it could transfer some kind of ambiguous filth onto us. Or perhaps women are just born dirty, and the sex merely reinforces our sullied selves' true nature." -Jessica Valenti

Such a poetic way to say 'life doesn't stop when you feel like crap/'

I tried out the salt water trick. Put a little salt water up your nose if the phlegm blocks your breathing. Gargle salt water to soothe sore throat.
I tried the gargling before. The nurse gave me the choice between that and a cough drop and it actually lasted longer. She was surprised that I even considered it.

Of course that was just me being wierd. When someone (normal) is given the choice between salt water or a low dosage of dxm which do you think they'll choose?

woooo. I'm convalescing from a cold right now. And it's certainly true that people tend to overreact when you get a cold but I think it's cute.
There are not many men in the world with any backbone left. Real men got crowded out by weaklings who harnesses the power of finance and legal loopholes. Real power is what you can do in the parking lot after the meeting is over. If the shit were real, I would be driving some lawyer's car right now. His scalp would be drying on the grill. Civilization is nearly over with. Your bullshit is falling to the ground. Your little morals are worthless and I am getting my kicks telling the truth as you drown in your lies and cowardly weakness. You don't like the things I have to say? So? Survival species, motherfucker.

Stay home... Yea, I choose DXM over salt water, of course...
We brag about our rights, our liberties, our freedoms. We fight for other nations peoples rights, we pride ourselves with these things we hold sacred, things set in stone by the Constitution of this United States! But! How many of us actually stop and think about what few liberties and freedoms we have left?

I'm just getting over a really bad cold or something that's been going around the school, it's been sticking with me since early february. Just in time for spring break in Mexico!

People really overreact when they get colds though, there've been some kids who missed weeks of school over this thing, I missed two days and probably should've taken a third off but my school has this stupid policy where if you miss 10 days of school starting on 11 you have to stay after school 2 days for every day you miss.

And then there's my dad who's convinced himself he's on his death bed...

The first time I got a cold after I graduated and moved back home, my family acted like I was dying! They were so shocked at how casual I was about it, that I have a system pretty much worked out with it. That one was a particularly bad one, and I took a few more pills than I probably should have, but, hey, I survived. My sister freaked out at how I acted in general, despite how much I try to tell her that Tylenol Cold does NOT contain opium. (I wouldn't touch that Coricidin shit with a ten foot pole! Especially since it's for people with high blood pressure and I have low blood pressure..yeah) Dad was like "Your glands are swollen!" And I'm like "Yeah, that always happens. So what?" And he's like "You should have your tonsils taken out. The pressure in your ears will pop your ear drums." And he went on like that! Annoying as hell.

    Use Zinc. It actually works.

Kennedy drift so far from the foreign policy and national security principles and policies that were at the core of its identity and its purpose? . . . A great Democratic secretary of state, Dean Acheson, once warned 'no people in history have ever survived, who thought they could protect their freedom by making themselves inoffensive to their enemies.' This is a lesson that today's Democratic Party leaders need to relearn." - Joe Lieberman

My secret weapon against the common cold:

    Zicam

It works beautifully; in comination with a couple shots of V8, Orange Juice, and a multi-vitamin, and one good night's rest.

Early on, of corse. Half-way through it isn't quite as effective, but still does help.

I've headed off colds almost completely by the above method.

Oh we've all done that... one day I'll tell you all of my little escapades with Tylenol PM and my general tolerance to Tylenol in general wich caused me for a time to need five pills just to get rid of a headache. Which probably would've never happened if I didn't get so fucked up off of Excedrin.

Uggh I'm still coming off this cold, and when I didn't run the mile today as fast as I did earlier my phys ed teacher got all pissed. When I told her I was sick she got all mad and said "You've been sick alot lately, are you sick every day!?"

I attempted to explain to her that when someone's sick they can't take a day off of being sick, but she wouldn't listen...
