Forum: Student Rights & Education

What's good and what's bad about school and how we can change it.

  1. Part of the problem with bullies and bullying.

Kids are not allowed to defend themselves. The first problem is that kids are constantly taught to, "ignore it and just let a teacher know." Then the teacher confronts the bully who puts on an angel act. The kid who ratted him out gets subjected to even more ridicule and bullying for telling on...

  2. Do YOU remember teachers like this or do you have teachers like this?

So, after a round of jeopardy with my boyfriend, the tv seemed to find it's way to the movie mean girls. I didn't think anything of it until I saw this, Teacher: Where are you going? Lindsey Lohan: To the bathroom... Teacher: You need the lavatory pass. Lindsey Lohan: Can I have the...

  4. Good teachers

Ya know we do a lot of teacher bashing here but I think we need to give props to teachers we've known who aren't complete pricks. I'll start with some of mine. I guess it's because writing is my only good subject that most of my favorite teachers were English teachers. My senior English teacher...

Prosecute Those Who Miss Parent-Teacher Conferences? Posted by Darrell Dawsey Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 2:15 pm Not unlike folks in other big cities with hamstrung public school systems, metro Detroiters are perpetually peeved about the sorry state of education in our area, so much so...

  12. Fuck you Texas textbook approval people!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/13/texas-textbook-massacre-u_n_498003.html This is really really really bad. Texas holds a huge sway on how textbooks are published, so much of America should be screwed (I think it's fair to say Student rights includes the right to be taught the truth).

  13. What's so great about Student Rights?

What I'm asking is, is what do student rights do for students that is so great? Why do we, students, need these rights? Do these rights have anything to do with learning? What could be a worse-case scenario if we didn't have those unalienable rights? Also, can someone list all of the student rights...

  14. Student Boycotts of Mandatory "Education"

I was wondering what would happen if students all over the country just said 'no' to this on-pain-of-fine-or-imprisonment order to go to these terrible public schools (and perhaps private ones too as they can suck just as much but are for some reason less likely to) where they are frequently...

  17. Rules of student press

I'm doing a public Service Announcement for my multimedia class, and I chose Rules of Student Newspapers. I know if it is a school funded paper, the principal can act as an editor, but a privately funded paper can be distributed without censorship. Is there anything I'm missing?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8579951.stm I don't know if this is really newsworthy, as there's no real youth rights issue here, but I found it interesting at any rate.

  22. Experimental Public Schools?

  24. My school loves to block anything they can...

I thought it was ridiculous when they started to block all music sites(even ones without file sharing) and all game sites, but now they're blocked educational sites too. Why? Some of the reasons are 'sex education' and 'abortion'? Are you kidding me? Abortion? So what if a student needs to do...
