http://www.change.org/petition…..tely-fired
This is a response from a parent of an autistic son who was bullied by…his teachers.

Letting go of anger at "the system" isn't a life skill-it's the lazy way out. The real skill is holding on and having the courage to do something about it even when the very adults you should be able to trust (parents, teachers, social group staff, psychologists, etc.) are demanding that you let go of it.

My reason for signing it:
There's been so much discussion about bullying in schools lately, but most people typically only think about student on student bullying. It's so easy for many people to forget that bullying is commonly committed by teachers, as well. It enrages me to hear news stories about teachers forcing students to relieve themselves in buckets after being denied restroom access and teachers forcing six year olds to sit in their own diarrhea through an entire exam. What's even worse is when teachers get away with these crimes against students' basic human rights by ducking behind teacher's unions or whatever nonsense used to defend their horrendous actions. This is the main reason why I cannot support teacher's unions. Teachers should be entitled to fair compensation and accommodations, but not if its under the same system used to justify the physical and mental abuse of students. Bullying needs to stop on every end of the spectrum, not just student bullying. The "teachers" who are responsible for these evil acts, as well as those who stood idly by and let it occur, must face the consequences for their actions and legislation must be passed to defend the rights of all students to not be abused or bullied by their instructors ever again. Situations like this will no longer be tolerated.
I assume most everyone in NYRA is in support of this petition, right?

Thank you very much. I was bullied by school staff myself as a child and I hope NYRA helps to get this legislation passed. What a wise response.

You have the full support of the National Youth Rights Association backing your cause, situations like this will no longer be tolerated.
I committed NYRA to supporting this cause, I assume that's not a problem for anyone.
While most in NYRA will surely support this petition, we must ask everyone not to speak on behalf of the organization unless you've been authorized by our Board of Directors or our Executive Director to do so. Like any serious organization, NYRA cannot have random people (even random supporters) committing us to positions or to actions, no matter how reasonable those positions or actions may be.
More than once, NYRA has suffered because outsiders held the organization wholly responsible for the statement of one member.
Any organization must make strategic choices about what campaigns to support and what resources to commit to those campaigns. These decisions cannot be made by each member and each supporter individually. In NYRA, these decisions are made by our Board of Directors (elected by NYRA's membership each summer) and by the Executive Director they hire to work on their behalf.
The statement above would have been more appropriately worded, "I'm confident you will have the full support of …" rather than "You have …"
So please, in the future, everyone should remember not to speak on behalf of others without the others' authorization.
Thank you.

I understand. Fortunately, I actually posted my response to the forums before signing it on the petition and I ended up tweaking my wording a bit, including cutting that part out. As much as I doubt many people in NYRA would disagree in supporting this, it occurred to me that I probably shouldn't be speaking for NYRA regardless. I ended up just not mentioning NYRA at all because I didn't want to seem like some sort of radical. It was probably for the best. I updated my previous post to reflect the change.
