Removing Destructive Board Members

Last fall, the board was faced with a board member who more or less single-handedly undid nearly five years worth of organizational and fundraising efforts.  The board chose to:  (1) not remove that member and (2) oppose the request of 15% of the membership to call a special election for the removal of that member.

I would like to ask the candidates whether they would vote to remove a board member who was severely undermining NYRA.

There was a lot more to that story than many people were being told, especially the people who were asked to call for the special election. While, yes, destructive board members shouldn't stay on, it is also the job of board members to assess the full situation before taking serious action. We can't just pitch someone out the second someone is unhappy, and there are two (or more) sides to every story.

As for the call of that special election, no such call was ever formally made. So it never materialized.

Ok, I've been hearing a lot of "certain board member" this and "certain board member" that, and obviously it has something to do with money and some sort of argument with some sort of back story filled with tension and angst that I will never understand because I came in August and I didn't know half the names…

So… Tell ME ABOUT IT!!! It sounds interesting and gossipy!!! Do Tell!! lol

But seriously, it's so important that we need to bring it up again; yet so unimportant that we can't at least mention said board members name??

The inter political workings of NYRA are starting to sound more like Harry Potter than inner political workings…

The Board Member, S/he who must not be named, destroyed the finances of NYRA long ago and may or may not have killed somebody. Most think s/he is dead, however some think s/he who must not be named may return to reak havoc on the wizarding youthrightsy world…

But seriously who is this destructive board member and why is this if jackist is afraid to name names being posted on the forums?

This all seems like a bad soap opera

It shouldn't be a crime to be young

The spirit of revolution that flooded our country during the 60's and 70's didn't die out but sadly became dorimant during the 80's but awoke again during the 90's and is rising during the 2000's and it will fly again changing our country until it's truly becomes the land of the free and home of the brave freeing everyone because nobody is free until everybody is free

Us minors, teens, children, youth, or whatever you like to call us are we not citizens and human beings and if we are how come we not treated like it

The story is a relatively straightforward tale of pride and hubris.  Last fall, the board member made a blog post that deeply offended NYRA's largest donor, refused to resign, and ultimately cost the organization a six-figure donation and the relationship with that donor.

Given that said board member decided not to run for re-election, there is no reason to associate a name with the shameful acts.

So the question is not why didn't we remove the board member who shall not be named, The question is how do you not offend the general donating public… How exactly did said board offend the general donating public, and what can we do to never do that again? If we just point fingers and have flame wars then we aren't learning anything from our mistakes…

Isn't youth rights generally offense to the public as a whole?

Youth rights is not offensive to our funders, or they wouldn't be our funders. What this board member wrote pointlessly offended many of our supporters as well as others.

I agree that there are often many sides to a story. When this and other controversies began to arise in the fall, I talked to a number of people on both sides of the issues to try and hear all of their sides, and I would do the same in future situations. In general though, if a director makes an error in judgment that severely hurts the organization, he or she should immediately resign from the board. This is what I would do if I were ever to make such an error in judgment, though I don't foresee this being a problem. If the director doesn't resign and the board determines, after taking into account all relevant information, that the director's continued presence on the board would be a detriment to NYRA, the board should vote to remove the director responsible.

Ok, I found out more about this, and seriously, everyone needs to stfu. Just stfu. STFU!!!!

Also, For the purpose of education, This is what we learned from this.

  • * Never Compare the youth rights movement to any other movement (Unless you do it in a "walking in a room of glasses trying not to break anything" type of way)
  • * Everyone makes mistakes, Even bad @$$ youth rights supporters
  • * Don't beat a dead horse.
  • * Not a lack of funds, but argueing over a lack of funds is whats gonna kill NYRA
  • * If you spend all of your time argueing over a lack of funds, nobody is going to give you funds
  • * When you spend time argueing over a lack of funds, you aren't using your time to do other stuff, LIKE SWITCHING YOUR $%^&*# PROFILE PICTURE FOR $%^&*# VOTES FOR YOUTH
  • * In fact, maybe it isn't a lack of funds that is crippleing NYRA, Maybe, Throwing it out there, It might be the lack of organization; When is the next protest? IDK. Where is the nearest NYRA Chapter? IDK. When is the next Chapter leaders meeting? Check your email and hope they emailed out the next NYRA Freedom. When are the board members meeting (So I can secretly spy on them)? Who knows. Of all of the NYRA Chapter meetings, Which chapter is meeting the soonest? How should i know? Before we complain about a lack of funding, can we get a google calendar together, so that our donars know that we're using our funds for something other than keeping the lights on while we argue. do-it-now
  • * Of course, I'm guilty of this as well. Instead of eduranting I could be protesting, or making videos, or talking to people of the internets about the beauty of youth rights.
  • * SO LETS PROTEST SOME #$%^ !

Oooh I forgot one

  • * Don't let your executive director of 12 years retire early, It looks really bad on paper (Except in this case, letting him retire might have been justified; Look at this forum!)
