I've never attempted to radicalise NYRA…

Award one internet for this post.

A question for everyone: If elected to the board, what concrete plans do you have for pushing NYRA forward?

Help me. NYRA is being run by Chip, who is awesome and rocks my face off — somehow i think this sig got haxed. well, this makes twice then.

^Yep. I just keep it around for the lulz.

I heartily second this question. It is easy to talk about youth power, to criticize, or to describe how you know public schools are unjust. However, while our BOD is unabashedly activist, much more of our time is spent doing procedural work to keep NYRA running (like planning action alerts or attempting to fundraise) than direct protesting. I think it's much more important to know what practical actions the candidates would plan to take during their terms.

Another question for the candidates; what is your opinion on the three bylaw amendments up for a vote this year?

VOTE YES ON ALL THE 2011 BYLAW CHANGES. The current system of 2 elections in 12 months cripples us.

I'm not running for reelection! Sweet, sweet retirement! New BOD members better do a good job lest I haunt them.

We've gotten bogged down in bylaw stuff and managerial issues, true, but that is a main part of any board's job. Yes, we should be doing the cool activisty stuff too, but part of the job is also dealing with a lot of mundane backend crap to maintain foundation and structure. Just sayin'. wink

I don't have any strong feelings about any of the new bylaws. It's a shame to force Alex off the board by making salaried staff ineligible, but I understand the rationale. The one about the two year terms, however, I voted against, because I feel like this is a big change for very little concrete reason and very little time to decide on adequate implementation, and that the reasons for enacting this wouldn't necessarily be taken care of this way.

To be completely honest, I think that NYRA needs to spend more time dealing with substantive issues and fleshing out the meaningful differences regarding ideology and tactics among those involved in the organization. I agree that administrative decisions are important and that process is an important aspect of any organizing effort, as is fundraising. However, without advancing the agenda of an organization these activities begin to exist for their own sake. We must continually ask ourselves how NYRA is contributing to the welfare of actual youth and advancing our ideology of youth empowerment (and not of the weak, watered down variety). Frankly, I see one of my chief goals as a candidate for the BOD as elevating the discourse present in the NYRA BOD and figuring out new ways to advance our activism that are meaningful and concrete.

As for my stance on the bylaws, I voted for them all. In my paper for my Introduction to Nonprofit Management class, I suggested that the executive director make himself separate from the BOD so that the BOD can serve as a check and balance on his judgment. I also like the idea of longer terms for BOD members because one year is not long enough to make substantial changes without worrying about the pressures of an upcoming reelection campaign.

I couldn't agree more with this, brilliant comment Kathleen.
