NYRA's next election is coming up. Will you run?
The National Youth Rights Association is governed by its Board of Directors (BOD), and the board members are elected by NYRA's dues-paying members. Board members shape our bylaws, decide our strategies, and hire and fire our Executive Director. In turn, they are expected to raise or donate money and/or pitch in with volunteer work.
Who May Run?
To run for a seat on NYRA's Board of Directors, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Be a US citizen or resident. Since NYRA focuses on United States policy, this organization is governed by people with a vested interest in this country's internal policies.
- Be a current NYRA-member. This means your $10/year dues are paid up through at least August 2012 (and, if elected, you'll need to keep up your membership throughout your term). If you would like to run but are not a dues-paying member, or you have let your membership lapse, you can pay your dues today.
What Are the Age-Limits?
Don't make us laugh! This is NYRA. There aren't any age-limits. Whether you're five-years-old or ninety-five, if you have something to offer us, we're ready to consider your candidacy.
Do Board Members Need to Live Near Washington, DC?
Not at all. In fact, some of our best board-members live elsewhere. Board meetings take place in an online chat room, so members can participate equally whether they live in DC or Hawaii. (You will want high speed internet access at appropriate times – most BOD meetings will take place either on a weekend or on a weekday evening.) Much of the volunteer work can also be done from anywhere. Our current Votes for Youth campaign is being largely led right now by a board member in Illinois and a volunteer in Minnesota.
How Do Candidates Run?
Send an email to bbystricky[over at]youthrights[period]org with the subject line "I'm running for BOD." In your message, include your first and last name, current address, and phone number. Deadline: Monday, May 28, 2012.
NYRA's office will verify your current membership. Then we will email questionnaires that candidates may answer to have shared with the voters. See example.
Online voting should begin around July 5th and end August 4th (during our Annual Meeting). Candidates need not be present to win.
If you're ready to step up and help lead NYRA to a brighter future, this is your chance to contribute something meaningful to the movement. You'll get a great line on your resume and a chance to develop and demonstrate skills that will impress any employer, but more importantly, you'll get a chance to earn a place in the history of the youth rights movement.
