Voting Rights Act 40th Anniversary-August 6- Let's Do Something

Saturday, August 6 is the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Interesting that its on the day of our meeting!

Anyway, we must get some real coverage out of this! The voting age is one of our top issues. We need to try to get NYRA in an AP story about voting rights, as well as maybe something on MTV or cable news or the big three networks!

We need to point out that the Voting Rights Act states that a "6th grade education" is enough knowledge to vote. We need to let them know about our movement.

We have at least 20-30 active NYRA folks on the forums. Can every agree to work like maybe 5-10 hours this week? I will do the same. And hopefully Alex will have time to work on this a good bit.

What do we need to do:

1. strategize— how can we get our message across (let's try to hold an online meeting tonight).

2. prepare a press release-

3. Call contacts, do what we can. Let's see if we can get coverage on this. Maybe call Gale Brewer's office in NYC, maybe they can get us press connected with the NYC bill.

4. Everyone who can- write a letter to the editor. I agree to donate $15 to NYRA for every letter to the editor that gets published on the voting age (in the next two weeks). Just take a couple of hours and write a two or three paragraph letter. Mention about the anniverasary of the Voting Rights Act and of course mention NYRA.

We have all of this week AND next week.

Let's have something to celebrate at the meeting: meaningful coverage on the voting age.

This is a great idea!

Keith, I'm no good at making press releases, and I'm leaving for Europe in 2 days not to return 'til August 21, but if you (or someone) made a press release real pronto and e-mailed it to me, I will do my best to get some Berkeley folks to do this.

Also, my op-ed got published today in the Daily Californian in Berkeley. Check it out here:

Lets meet and discuss HOW we can make sure NYRA gets its voice in the press and as much coverage as possible leading up to the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. I will be available at about 9 pm central (10 eastern) but I can meet earlier if needed)

Online meeting tomorrow night, after the in person meeting with FVAP and Brewer's office that is taking place, would be better. Also, August 6th isn't next week and it isn't Sunday. It's 2 weeks from this past Saturday. We've got about 12 days to go.

It would be at 430 or 5, not 6. We need to secure the ability to use the MLK courtyard or figure out somewhere else to go if we are to do the rally, also. What can people here sign up to help do? We are going to need a press release and press kit, ideas or designs for signs, and I guess more brainstorming over what else we need…

If this is to go well, we really need people to step up and help out, since me and Ana already have our hands full with working with the FVA and Brewer people on the bill, preparing for the Annual Meeting itself w/ materials and logistics and the rest, and preparing everything else needed for having space for people to stay… plus dealing with usual day to day work things, etc.

Let's use this space here to get it all done.

Keith and all: This rally isn't going to happen if the people here and in national that want it to happen don't work on it — pretty much right now. Today is Sunday the 31st of July. The meeting and 40th Anniversary of the VRA is in 6 days. This isn't something we can just spontaneously do without preparation after the annual meeting. We need a press release at the very least, fast. We also need to detail what materials need to be made, purchased, etc so that they can actually be done. If it's just me and Ana left to do it all it won't get done considering how much else there is to do in preparation for this weekend and in dealing with FVA/Brewer's office. For everyone who actually wants to see this meeting and hopefully a rally be a successful reality, now is the time to actually work on it. Please step forward.

I still have a huge amount of work to do with this Annual Report, and much of next week I'll be seeing Cathy for the first time in 3 weeks (and the last time for another 3 weeks). So I really don't have a lot of time for this thing either.

If someone writes a press release I'll edit it, and e-mail it out to all my media contacts. And I'll make myself available, as usual, for interviews, but that's about all I can promise for this. This Annual Report is my priority.

That makes sense (although I hope you can verify Warped Tour in the meatime as well). You should totally be doing the work you are already doing and not be left to pick up even more slack for other people. But if others who want this rally to happen aren't able to do the work for it, then it just isn't going to happen. There really isn't any time left, and all those who said this was such a good idea really need to step up now.

I will give all the time I possibly can on it. As I was telling Scott, we should have no problem getting enough people to do it. which is a HUGE achievement for us. Given the number of people who will be showing up for the meeting alone (in excess of 20 I imagine), as well as the FVAp people.

The main thing is getting press.

Jason, I would like to meet with you and Ana tonight if possible. I have three main ideas in terms of press contacts. We will need to cull whatever contacts Brewer's office has. Jason, if you can talk to Tomas Hunt, that would be great. If not, I will call him myself from the road tomorrow.

1. local media- contact the usual array of local tv. We need to tell them this is a voting age protest on the 40th anniversary of the voting rights act of 1965.

2. AP, Reuters, UPI- This is REALLY important. These folks have offices in NYC, Im sure. Maybe we can get contacts from Tomas. If not, maybe we can find them some other way.

3. MTV! maybe BET and NICK/DISNEY (MTV is most important though). If they have offices in NYC we should try to contact someone and see if they can film it for a news segment.

I am willing to spend as much time as I possibly can on this. There will be difficulties though, because I likely will not have access to a full computer. But I will have internet, email, IM and phone, which should be adequate.

Any other ideas?

The key is getting contact information from Tomas or some other source

Great, can you send it by email to me, Keith, Ana, Alex, and anyone else how wants to see this move forward?

We also need people making press kits for Saturday, if any press is going to show up… and posting ideas for signs to be made during the meeting for use at the rally.

Generally, this bill in nyc is the most serious chance to making lowering the voting age anywhere a real thing. Even if it doesn't ultimately become law here in NYC until 2009, the impact on media awarness and on how seriously the issue is taken nationwide will be huge. But that only happens if everyone who talks about how much they support a lower voting age is willing to put in real hours or work on a regular basis to get this done. It isn't enough to show up to an event and sit around and just listen while one or two or three people slave away (like Alex or Scott or me or Ana) to make the events happen in the first place. If people aren't willing to actually work to win then I don't know what we are doing here in the first place.
