A National Discussion List

I have been giving this some thought, and I think it is time we go for a national discussion e-mail list. After seeing people get frustrated with the high traffic of the ASFAR list back in the day, and wanting to inconvenience members the least, I decided to create regional, action-oriented, moderated e-mail lists on yahoo groups. Four of them.

There have been bursts of activity here and there, and NYRA-Northeast was heavily used for a while. But now all four are little used, and mostly dormant.

Now I've changed my mind about what is more valuable to us as an organization. I think its better to have a smaller pool of people who don't mind a high traffic list, and participate actively in it, than a larger pool of people who don't want to be inconvenienced by too many e-mails, and don't really do anything anyways. Plus we've got the low volume national announce list anyways for the skittish folks.

So even if we have less people on a national discussion list than the 4 region lists collectively, I'm hoping they'll get used and be another good method of communication between the organization and the membership, because I'm feeling more and more lately that there just hasn't been enough communication.

Your thoughts?

I think it's an excellent idea Alex.

I don't think we need to totally abandon the idea of having lists more geared toward certain regions though. We just can't maintain them ourselves. Instead we can have chapters run their own email lists.

We can create email lists for chapters through our web server, just as we offer web space for chapters, but they will have to administrate and moderate them entirely themselves.

Nationally we can just have one list for discussion, and one list for announcements.

btw, all the options in the poll assume we will have the national announce list that we send the newsletter out on and special announcements. Thats never going away, but thats only like 2-3 e-mails a month, and all coming from national staff.

I believe that we should keep the Regional lists and keep the National list. It is a good idea with the lists we have now, but if chapters want to have a chapter list, that would be a good idea. Whenever we get some developments in the South region, we will be sure to use our Regional list. If we have news for the nationals to use, we will use the National list.

But, there are a lot of lists as there is.

Banana?

Oh, I'm sure I knew it at one point. And I certainly support the "banana" option, but it seems out of place in a serious poll like this.

Though I've been known to include the banana in weird posts.

I wonder if the banana could be simply given as a poll option in the graphical form…

I just really don't like having to maintain so many lists. It would be easier to deal with one list rather than four in a lot of ways.

I wouldn't mind a high volume national list. It's better to be high volume than no volume no matter how you look at it banana
