A great day for an under-18 year old

I had the best experience ever yesterday and I had more political power than the average over-18 year old have ever had in their lives.

In Wales, the people are sick of the Labour government and so, The Party of Wales, Welsh Conservatives and the Welsh Liberal Democrats decided on a coalition that would flatten Labour.

The Liberal Democrats held a meeting to discuss wether it was going ahead yesterday. Throught the meeting, it was the same as in the Houses of Parliament, people were standing up and saying why they were for/against the plans.

At the end, most of us got to vote on whether it was going ahead or not. Members of the LD executive were not allowed to vote but all other members were…including a "silly little 17 year old kid" who is normally disenfranchised from all elections. The result was: 125 – yes and 77 – no. I voted yes..and won!

After I voted, a LD councillor said to me "what you just did then made sure that the coalition went ahead. Without people like you, the Labour party would still be at large. That decision of whether the coalition was happening or not was not with the usual voter who merely has it for being 18. It was with you becasue you are interested enough in politics to sit through a 4 hour political debate without getting bored."

I was so happy and amazed that I texted all my family members, my dad said "well done! That was far more influential than voting in the general election – I'm very proud of you". I still can't believe I did it, I was basically a Member of Parliament just for one day – and I'm under 18. grin

Congratulations. That sounds great!

"Thanks for your e-mail and I appreciate the fact that you articulated your viewpoint in a rational and cogent manner. A few questions though, Stefan. Who are you voting for in the Presidential Election this November? Kerry? Bush? Oh, you mean you can't vote? Why is that? What kind of car do you drive? Ford? Jeep? Oh you mean you don't drive. Why is that? Why is that you can't just stay home for the rest of the year and not go to school? Why?"

- New York City Councilman James Oddo, in a letter to me, October 2004.

And year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation, we still hear the same old complaints. Kids don’t appreciation, they don’t behave, they don’t learn. They spend too much time on frivolous pursuits. They have no work ethic, no respect. They don’t understand the value of a dollar. They’re impulsive. They don’t understand risk. They don’t look ahead to the future.

And year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation, adult society responds with more of the same.
