Board of Directors

BOD members are elected once a year by a vote of the entire NYRA membership, either by written ballot or in person at the annual meeting. The current NYRA Board of Directors (BOD) is made up of the following people (in alphabetical order):

Justin Graham

I am a youth rights activist. I am passionate about the cause of youth. I am angered by the injustices to which young people in America are subjected, and I am determined to do something about them.

I believe that young people are intelligent, capable, and competent. I believe that youth are of great value to our society, with as much basic human worth as anyone else. Young people are not dangerous aliens to be controlled. They are not freaks to be feared. They are not imbeciles to be looked down upon. Young people are *people*, an obvious fact that is too often overlooked by those in charge.

It is time for a change. It is time for young people to be judged by their competence and character, not by their age. It is time for politicians, teachers, school administrators, parents, and America at large to take us seriously.

Many young people in school stand every day and recite the pledge of allegiance, extolling the American value of "liberty and justice for all." The attainment of liberty and justice for youth is near, and I am confident that I can work effectively towards that goal as a NYRA Director.

Eric Kim

My determined and ever intensifying passion for the cause of youth rights inspires me to apply for the Board of the National Youth Rights Association. As a junior in high school, and furthermore as the President of the Bergen County NYRA, NJ, I have witnessed firsthand the injustices that juvenile citizens suffer due to ageism. At the same time, I have taken it upon myself and my chapter to combat these injustices, most recently desegregating a local McDonald’s from prohibiting persons 21 and younger from being served through letter writing campaigns and meetings with the management.

Over the two years that I have been a member of the NYRA, I have continued to address the issue of the voting age, and this is undoubtedly the cause I am most passionate about. I have met with town mayors and state senators to discuss possible amendments to the New Jersey State Constitution, which prohibits persons under the age of 18 from legally voting. Though a difficult task, I believe through perseverance and dedication, the youth of America can coalesce and speak their minds.

Jason Kende
Recognizing at a very young age the value of cultivating the basic rights of all people in a free society, he has played an important role in the youth rights movement for many years. Involved in various technology, design, consulting, and organizational roles with NYRA since 2000-2001, he was elected to the NYRA Board of Directors for the 03-04 term, and remains a leader of the NYC chapter. His accomplishments include significant contributions towards the creation of the Youth Rights Network wiki, the upgrade of NYRA's forums from the antiquated version of UBB previously used, and the installation of most of the blog software used by NYRA chapter and national. In his advocacy efforts he has worked with elected representatives and youth oriented non-profit organizations on the NYC Voting Age bill, the New York City Council attempt to overturn the NYCDOE student cell phone ban, and is organizing a Youth Voting Rally for Election Day 2008. He is co-organizer of regularly held youth rights discussions in NYC where potential supporters can meet, talk, and work to advance NYRA's policy, advocacy, outreach, issue education, fundraising, and chapter development goals.

Alex Koroknay-Palicz
Alex Koroknay-Palicz, originally from Michigan, moved to the DC area after attending American University. During his senior year in high school, Alex successfully changed the policy of several age-discriminatory stores in his hometown of Holland, MI. Since then Alex has become actively involved in all levels of the Youth Rights Movement. In his capacity as NYRA's Executive Director, Alex has appeared on CNN and Fox News several times and has spoken at numerous conferences about youth rights and NYRA. Alex was voted into office in 1999.

Keith Mandell
Keith Mandell has had an interest in youth rights since he drafted a "Students' Bill of Rights" at age 10. At 14, he convinced his elementary school's student council to approve a student court where teachers could be judged by students for improper conduct (unfortunately it never materialized). At age 23, Keith ran for mayor of Columbia, Missouri, focusing on job growth and transportation issues. Keith became involved in youth voting rights in the late 1990's, working with YouthSpeak to organize to voting age protests and drafting a proposal to lower the voting age in Washington D.C. Keith is now an attorney in the Chicago area and especially interested in voting rights and youth political empowerment. Keith joined the Board in 2004.

She graduated from Salisbury State University in 2003, and currently, she is working as a biotech lab assistant. Katrina joined the Board in 2005.

Stefan Muller

For NYRA, he helped write the Student Rights Handbook and currently designs chapter websites. Stefan was elected to the Board in 2007.

Chip Sinton

Chip Sinton, 17, lives in Orlando, Florida.
